Skin problems are seen daily in most veterinary practices. Clinical signs can include pets scratching, chewing or rubbing at themselves, hair loss, conjuncitivitis, ear disease, skin infections or ulceration to name but a few!

Some skin diseases can be diagnosed and cured in a short consultation in general practice. However, some can be more complicated and involve more than one cause. It is these cases where the dermatology referral can be invaluable. It allows the vet and the owner time to discuss problems in detail and to carry out specific investigations which are more in depth. Generally a first consultation will take 1 hour and will involve a half hour consultation with the owner, and the remainder of the time examining the pet and taking samples. Whilst most dermatology referrals are for dogs and cats, it is possible to see small mammals, birds, reptiles and horses.

Mary worked in the dermatology / pathology departments at Glasgow Vet School where she was awarded the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Dermatology, and a PhD in canine atopic dermatitis. She then offered a referral dermatology service in Edinburgh and Hampshire. Her particular areas of interest are allergic skin disease and ear disease. Intradermal skin testing is available on request.

Referral cases can be seen at short notice. For more information please call Mary on 01738 635633.
